Affectionately dubbed ‘Queen of the Turnips’ by her family, Pam takes the title and responsibility of her crown very seriously. She spends most of her time coordinating with farmers to plan the season – filling the baskets with a wide variety of delicious fresh food, and working on the farm to table logistics. Her special talent is pulling rabbits out of hats.
Maryann joined us early on and has become an integral part of the SSO team, she cares deeply about our customers and works tirelessly behind the scenes looking after their needs, and keeping our business administration organized so that we can make good decisions. Her favorite way to cook veggies is to roast them – yum!
The Thinker – if there is a way to do it smarter, Chuck will find it! His wheels are always turning and because of this, Chuck coordinates internal logistics for us and keeps our wheels turning too. His only vice is a sun ripened white peach picked from a nearby tree, and we make sure he has at least one bushel to call his own come summertime.
Drummer, baker, Popsicle maker – Kevin knows every lyric, every beat, every tune, to every song ever written, and is a walking encyclopedia of movie facts too. A born entertainer (starring in the latest Ghostbusters as a metal head) who breaks the occasional drumstick, Kevin is here every Monday and Wednesday folks (we should sell tickets!)
The Dynamite – don’t let Hazel’s petite frame, blue eyes, and lovely accent fool you, this lady is as tough as nails. From a remote farm in Zimbabwe to the South Shore community of Massachusetts, she’s seen it all and knows how to get the job done. Sometimes it’s with a whip, and sometimes it’s with delicious homemade ginger bread.
Alyssa joined us at the tender age of sixteen as was one of our first employees – her dad is our sunflower grower. Even though she is now at UMass studying Psychology, she comes home to fill in for us during breaks and we send her back to school with arm loads of advice about love, life, and locking her doors at night.
Michelle’s work at SSO aligns with a personal mission to live sustainably and meaningfully. She and her family grow vegetables, and happily play host to honey bees. She is the driving force behind our Nourish to Flourish program, and writes regularly for our blog. Michelle also has high hopes to someday master the ukulele.
The Bachelor – he loves long walks on the beach, and reading poetry in the moonlight (we tease). Elliot used to have his own landscaping company, but now hangs with us helping on the packing table, driving to farms, and doing deliveries. He frequently enjoys a salad for dinner and does crazy delicious things with eggplant.
Our young Padawan – a trip to Nicaragua forever colored the lens through which he sees our food system, his desire to see it reformed into something more sustainable led him to us, and we will be forever grateful. He can’t stand idle (if he does, his fingers drum a beat) and breakfast is his favorite meal of the day.
Alyssa says, "Pam is our inspiration! Not only is she a small (fiercely independent) business owner, but each decision is carefully considered to align with our mission: create a sustainable food system and support local farmers. South Shore Organics is her baby, and she has created a fun, happy, and loving work environment for all. We are one big weird wacky family."
Things we love about what we do:
When young children shout out 'The farm box is here! The farm box is here! And their squeals of delight at the surprises waiting to be discovered. When we are asked 'what is a sunchoke?' over and over (and over). Shaking the calloused hand of a farmer. Sampling the goods! That what we do matters, and together with our customers we're making a difference.
